The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wonderful, inexpensive, way to get the whole set of Hitchhiker's Guide books. I strongly recommend these books to those interested in comedy and extremely well done science fiction.
The recent movie has rekindled interest in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide. After seeing the movie, I found this book on the Bargain table at a bookstore near home, and decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did.
Adams has two great strengths as a writer. First, his style is delightfully witty. He manages to be quite clear while communicating in a very humorous way. Second, his attention to detail is amazing. It can fairly be said that, at the end of the series, no stone is left unturned. Every detail that, only reading the first book in the series, would seem somewhat mysterious or strange is explained by the end of the series. Though at times I lost faith in Adams ability to tie everything together, by the end I was extremely satisfied as no loose ends remained to be tied up. This feat was huge given that Adams created a universe in which time travel and dimension hopping both occur frequently. Generally, this would lead to a great mess. But, Adams works it all out so that, in the end, it makes sense.
I highly recommend Adams' masterpiece series, and the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide is a fantastic form in which to acquire it.
